In 1967 William L. Shelton and Richard D. Morr joined their practices to form Morr & Shelton Law Firm and eventually moved their offices to 205 North Main just north of the northwest corner of the Chariton square. Michael J. Streit joined the firm in 1975 and was with the firm for seven years before becoming a District Court Judge and later a Justice of the Iowa Supreme Court.
In 1980 Richard Morr became a District Court Judge and the firm became known as Shelton Law Firm. Bill Shelton served as Lucas County Attorney from 1967 to 1982, and in 1987 relocated his offices to the west side of town on Court Avenue. The practice over the years has expanded and contracted. In the mid-1980's the firm had offices in Indianola and Des Moines in addition to its Chariton office, and at one time it had a total of 23 employees, including twelve lawyers–seven in Chariton, two in Indianola, and three in Des Moines. William L. Shelton started practicing law in Chariton in 1966. He graduated from the University of Iowa Law School and then spent four years practicing in California before returning to his home town of Chariton. Bill and his wife, Barbara, are both from Chariton. They have seven children -- Doug, Karen, Margo, Becky, Melissa, Kyle, Brandon. R. William Petersen joined the firm as an attorney in 1980. He is from Traer, Iowa, and a graduate of Creighton Law School in Omaha, Nebraska. He was admitted to the Iowa bar in 1976. Brandon J. Shelton joined the firm as an attorney in 2006. He is the son of Bill and Barbara Shelton and a 2006 graduate of Oklahoma City University Law School. He was admitted to the Iowa Bar in 2006 and resides in Chariton.
